Frequently Asked Questions

Who can apply for this program?
Any UBC student currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree credit program who speaks English as a second or additional language.

When does it start?
You can sign up during Jump Start or GALA student orientation events in August 2011, or at any time during your studies at UBC. Space is limited so sign up sooner rather than later. Once you have started you have until the end of April to finish. The sooner you engage with the program, the more opportunities you will have to access all aspects of the program.

Will my Faculty know I’m doing this?
No, it’s strictly confidential. We will keep general data for research and development but it cannot be accessed by your Faculty.

If I only need help in one area such as speaking clearly or writing, can I just do that?
Yes, your AES learning plan is designed to meet your individual needs.

How much of my time will it take?
You'll need about 3 hours to complete the online diagnostic module and up to an hour for your first meeting with your language coach. After that it depends on your individual AES learning plan and how much time you want to devote to the program.

When will I see an English language coach?
You can book an initial appointment with your language coach immediately, but it is recommended that you complete the Diagnostic Module first. If your coach has some information about you, it will be better use of your time at the first meeting.

Who are the language coaches?
UBC instructors at the UBC Continuing Studies English Language Institute. All of the coaches have graduate degrees in English language teaching or related fields, and many years of university English language teaching experience.

Why is UBC doing this?
Because we recognize that academic work in a language that is not your mother tongue is highly demanding and we want to help you to be as successful as you can.
