Here's what's involved and how much time it will take you to follow the Academic English Support (AES) program. Once you and your language coach have agreed on an AES learning plan, you'll need anywhere between one and three hours a week over a four-month UBC session. You can do more or less depending on how much time you have available.
When you're ready, click Apply. You fill in a form and send it to us. You'll need your CWL login name and email address to complete the form. Within two days you'll receive a confirmation email with instructions on accessing the online Diagnostic Module. All of your information will remain confidential and will not be shared with your Faculty.
Before you begin the diagnostic module, you should schedule a meeting time with your language coach. You do this by selecting a time from the calendar in the course menu within Vista. Your coach will review the results of your diagnostic module, and will prepare a draft AES learning plan to discuss with you at your meeting.
Before meeting your language coach, you are asked to complete the diagnostic module. This will help you prepare for the first meeting by producing material which will maximize our ability to help you improve your academic English language skills. This process will help you reflect on your existing English language competencies in order to identify areas in which an individual AES learning plan can be developed by you and a language coach. If you are having trouble or are unsure of how to proceed, book an initial appointment with a language coach and he/she will help you get started.
Your AES learning plan will include specific self-study websites and/or short, focused courses, mostly online. Your language coach will check in with you at subsequent meetings and online as you work through your AES learning plan
.
If you google English language self-help websites, you'll find thousands. Some are good, some are not so good. But which are the best, which will actually help you with your academic English? UBC language coaches monitor self-help websites to find the most useful ones for this program. They may recommend some of these as part of your AES learning plan.
We have developed eight short, focused courses based on our experience of students' academic English needs. Your AES learning plan may include one or more of these courses.
