Business analysts are increasingly playing an integral role in IT and most other business operations. The UBC Certificate in Business Analysis delivers an award-winning part-time program that is both designed and facilitated by experts in the field, and is aligned with the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA®) body of knowledge.

The UBC Certificate in Business Analysis program helps learners develop and apply the skills and techniques needed to elicit, critically analyze and validate requirements to meet business needs. Building on the IIBA® Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABOK®) industry standard, learn how to synthesize organizational information, build a shared understanding between stakeholders and the project team, effectively facilitate solutions, and communicate courses of action to achieve an organization's goals.

Prior experience in business analysis or information technology is not essential.

Curriculum

The UBC Certificate in Business Analysis is delivered through seven 100% online courses in a part-time format. Certificate candidates are expected to complete all seven required courses within a two year period, beginning with the Fundamentals of Business Analysis (II850).

Participants should plan to spend an average of six to ten hours per week in each course reading case studies and white papers, as well as completing online reading, online discussions, assignments, viewing videos and independent study. Please ensure that your work, travel, or other responsibilities will not constrain your learning for the duration of the course.

Details and Fees

The UBC Certificate in Business Analysis is delivered through seven 100% online courses in a part-time format. In order to receive the certificate, participants are expected to complete all seven required courses within a two year period, starting with the Fundamentals of Business Analysis.

Applications to the program are accepted on an ongoing basis. Courses are scheduled throughout the year and participants register for each course individually.

Program Fees
There is a $175 non-refundable administration fee which is due upon acceptance into the program. Course fees are paid on a course-by-course basis and total $7,440 (CAD) for all seven certificate courses. There is no fee to apply to the program.

Format
Each certificate course:

  • is delivered online over approximately four to eight weeks
  • involves an average of six to ten hours of study per week
  • includes reading case studies and white papers, as well as completing online reading, online discussions, viewing videos and independent study

Participants must have access to a flowcharting type of software like Microsoft Visio, PowerPoint or SmartDraw to complete some assignments.

Methodology and Assessment
The curriculum encompasses a significant amount of reading, including online lectures, books, case studies and white papers, in conjunction with online learning activities such as lectures, videos, group discussions and research. Students are assessed on participation, tests, assignments and projects.

Throughout the program, each methodology is woven together with planning, problem solving and critical thinking skills. Theory-based learning is grounded in case studies and other practical reality checks such as discussion groups and online lectures by subject matter experts on topics central to current industry practices and standards.

Participants:

  • should plan to spend an average of six to ten hours per week in each course reading case studies and white papers, as well as completing online reading, online discussions, assignments/projects, group work and independent study.
  • must have access to a flowcharting type of software like Microsoft Visio®, PowerPoint® or SmartDraw® to complete some assignments.

Instructors

The courses in the UBC Certificate in Business Analysis are developed by qualified professionals with high business acumen and experience in the field of study and adult education. The knowledge they bring to the program comes from years of teaching and hands-on experience gained in the field.

UBC's online tutors are business professionals experienced in online adult education. They are charged with the online instruction and guidance of students on a one-to-one and group basis. The online tutors guide and grade through continuous email communication as well as online discussions, assignments and projects to make sure that you get the most out of your learning experience.

How to Apply

Participants may take the Fundamentals of Business Analysis course prior to applying to the UBC Certificate in Business Analysis but must be accepted into the program before registering for remaining business analysis courses.

  • meet the admission requirements (see below)
  • fill out an online application form and provide any supporting documents.

Admission Requirements
The admissions process helps to ensure that the needs, intentions and expectations of participants are adequately matched to the program's objectives and capabilities. Admission to the program may be limited by the availability of courses and online instructors.

To accommodate learners from a variety of backgrounds, the admission requirements for the UBC Certificate in Business Analysis are fairly broad. However, all applicants must have the following:

  • access to a flowcharting type of software like Microsoft Visio®, PowerPoint® or SmartDraw® to complete some assignments
  • a post-secondary education
  • a business background gained through education and/or experience
  • management experience with budgetary responsibilities.

Prior experience in business analysis or information technology is not essential.
