Tuition and Payment

What payment options do I have to pay for a course?

All course fees are payable in Canadian dollars. UBC Continuing Studies accepts cash, personal and certified cheques (payable to "UBC Continuing Studies"), MasterCard, Visa, debit card (at some locations) and wire transfer. For wire transfer instructions, please contact the program unit responsible for your course or program.

If you are registering online and paying via credit card, only one card credit card can be used for the entire transaction.

Can I obtain a student loan to pay for a program?

Student loans are limited to students enrolling in and attending a recognized full-time post-secondary level program leading to a formal credential. As such, all full-time UBC Continuing Studies certificate programs may be eligible for student loan funding. Part-time programs, due to their duration and course load, are not eligible for student loans.

Why is tax charged on some courses but not others?

Fees payable to UBC Continuing Studies are subject to tax except as noted below:

  1. Language programs in Canada's two official languages (English and French).
  2. Courses that are part of certificate programs.
  3. Accredited professional development courses or programs.
  4. Courses given outside Canada.

I'm a UBC employee. How can I access UBC Continuing Studies courses?

Most UBC employee groups are eligible for tuition fee waivers that reimburse or offset the cost of most UBC Continuing Studies courses. Please visit the UBC Tuition Waiver web page for information on eligibility and instructions on how to submit your tuition fee benefit to take part in UBC Continuing Studies courses. Do not register for a course prior to submitting your Tuition Waiver.

If your department or faculty is funding the course, please submit an authorized JV along with your registration to the appropriate program office.

Certificate Programs

What are the prerequisites to enter certificate programs?

Each UBC Continuing Studies certificate program has specific prerequisites. Review the web page for the certificate program that interests you for details. An Admissions Committee reviews applications to determine qualifications and suitability for the programs.

Are participants in certificate programs graded?

Participants are assessed and receive a number grade from 1 to 100 according to University guidelines on student assessment. Students must achieve a minimum grade of 60% in all courses to complete their certificate program.

What do I receive when I complete the certificate program?

Upon completing the program requirements, participants are awarded a UBC Certificate in their program signed by the Executive Director of UBC Continuing Studies.

Does completion of a UBC certificate qualify for academic credits towards a diploma or degree program?
No, certificate programs are stand-alone non-credit programs that cannot currently be used for towards credit diploma or degree programs.
