Volunteer Opportunities for Global Academics Programs

Calling All Volunteers!

Are you fascinated by culture and travel? Participate in an intercultural experience without leaving the city as Global Academics program volunteer.

Our programs attract students from around the world to come to Vancouver and learn about Canadian culture, intercultural communication and being a global citizen.

Who are the Global Academic students?
Our students are typically undergraduates from China, Korea and Japan with varying levels of language skills and degrees of familiarity with North American culture. By taking part in our programs, students prepared to pursue global careers (through the internship programs) or further their studies in North America (through the academic preparation programs).

Our Programs
Programs run from four-16 weeks and commitment needs are as follows:

Winter: January to April Applications are due by late November.
Summer: late June to mid-August Applications are due by mid-May.


Volunteer Responsibilities

As volunteers you may:

  • interact with students by participating in social, cultural, and classroom activities (e.g. multicultural forums, student presentations, roundtables)
  • act as cultural guides
  • increase the international students' exposure to "Canadian Culture"
  • introduce students to different parts of the UBC Vancouver campus and Metro Vancouver
  • participate in city and campus tours with the students.

This opportunity allows you to become familiar with different cultures while practicing your leadership, teamwork and communication skills. Be an ambassador for Canada and Vancouver and broaden your understanding of the world through this intercultural experience.

Upon completion of a training session and requisite volunteer hours, you will also receive an official Letter of Recognition from UBC Continuing Studies.

Commitment Required

  • Attend a two-hour training session
  • Fulfill at least 15 hours of volunteer assignments throughout the program

Applicant Requirements
In order to be considered, applicants must be at least 19 years of age and be able to communicate in English at a native or almost native speaker level. Ideally, you should be familiar with Vancouver and involved in extra- curricular activities that can be shared with students. Interest in or experience with different cultures is an asset.
