Learning a language serves as a mirror to see who we are and what we are able to accomplish. The global village we live in today is becoming smaller thanks to modern means of communication and transportation which deepen our need to understand and appreciate each other. As language educators, we believe in the power of language and how language learning enriches us in many ways.
In our increasingly technology oriented world, learning a language in the classroom setting helps us interact with and learn from each other, and thus build human connections. When we speak, we wish to speak to a listening audience which is what a language classroom experience provides.
In over 30 years of language teaching and learning at UBC Continuing Studies, we have seen many changes. We have seen the addition of programs at our Robson Square location, of online programming, of new certificate programs. To complement the cultural understanding gained from learning a language we have added culinary arts classes, understanding wine courses and destination travel programs. We have evolved from a program of 5 languages to 21 languages; from a few hundred students a year to thousands.
I hope you will join us and become a member of the global village!
Yours truly,
