Student Funding Options

Two main sources of funding may be available to eligible students. One is through British Columbia Student Assistance Program (BCSAP), and the other is through Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC).

British Columbia Student Assistance Program

Canada student loans are available for the following full-time certificate programs:

Note: Part-time programs are not eligible for student loans.

The Ministry of Advanced Education, Student Services Branch is responsible for financial assistance to students under the British Columbia Student Assistance Program (BCSAP).

What are the procedures to obtain a Canada Student Loan?

If you are interested in attending UBC Continuing Studies full-time, funding assistance may be available from The Ministry of Advanced Education in the form of a Canada Student Loan. If you qualify for assistance, the amount of funding you receive will depend on your individual situation.

Forms may also be picked up at UBC Brock Hall, Financial Aid Office. Government agents and Employment Insurance offices also have the forms available.

It can take up to six weeks for Canada Student Loans to arrive at a decision. Policies and procedures vary. Please contact the Canada Student Loans office for details.

The maximum amount of Canada Student Loan money available varies according to the program.

What happens once Canada Student Loans accepts my application for sponsorship?

Canada Student Loans will advise you of their decision in writing. Payments will be made directly to the student.

UBC Continuing Studies is required to submit monthly reports to Canada Student Loans. If for any reason a student's enrollment is terminated, funding will cease and the student is responsible for any outstanding tuition and other related expenses.

Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC)

Eligible participants receive financial assistance to complete a course or program of instruction. Applicants must demonstrate that their choice of skills training represents the most direct route to employment.

What costs are covered?

Funding may be provided to participants to cover all or a portion of the following costs:

  • tuition fees for a course or program of instruction
  • expenses for a course of instruction such as books and software and/or
  • living expenses and other costs relating to dependent care, disability needs, transportation and accommodation.

The level of funding is negotiated on an individual basis and is usually for a period of up to one year.

Who is eligible to apply?

Participants are unemployed people who meet the following conditions when they request assistance:

  • receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits
  • had an EI claim in the past three years; or
  • started a maternity or parental benefits claim in the past five years and is now seeking to re-enter theworkforce after having cared for a newborn or adopted child
How to apply?

Participants should contact a Service Canada Centre to be referred to a case manager. The case manager will determine if the program is appropriate. If appropriate, the individual and case manager will develop a Return to Work action plan outlining how participation in the program will lead to employment.

The applicant will also provide documentation that includes the course outline, tuition costs and personal finances.

An official reviews all applications, assessments and action plans. If approved, participants are responsible for enrolling in the course and paying any related costs. Skills Development applications must be approved before the course or program begins.
