Creative nonfiction is a broad and exciting genre that encompasses everything from the contemporary memoir to the historical biography, as long as it is “based on a true story”. It includes Hunter S. Thompson’s Gonzo journalism and Susan Griffin’s poetic examination of war; it encompasses David Sedaris’s humour and even Carl Sagan’s sweeping discussion of the cosmos. Class time is spent writing, revising, and discussing samples of the form by writers such as Joan Didion, Tom Wolfe, Jeannette Walls, and Patricia Hampl. Come with your curiosity, your knowledge and your wonder and turn your unique view of the world into invigorating and exciting prose.
