The first steps of writing a novel are the first steps in a challenging and exciting journey. Learn to navigate those vital early stages, build story and structure, deepen characters, and develop themes, as well as handle those tricky technical choices that novelists have to make as they begin. Lectures, exercises and discussions expand your understanding of character development, narrative voice, plots and subplots, back-story, research, beginnings, point of view and chapter organization. You also have opportunities to address issues particular to your project. The course concludes with a discussion of publishing.
This course can be applied to the UBC Award of Achievement in Creative Writing.
