Online Workshop: Intercultural Cities

This workshop will explore the ways in which global cities and smaller towns are coming to terms with the contemporary multi-ethnic reality, particular those places which embrace diversity as an asset and opportunity, as part of the Intercultural Cities movement (ICC). While there are now many alliances of cities with an interest in diversity, Intercultural Cities is notable in having evolved from an explicit ‘Cultural Planning’ approach, through the joint action of the Council of Europe and the Comedia think tank.

The Instructor is the designer of the ICC methodology which has now been adopted by a network of cities of over 60 cities in 20 countries in 3 continents.

On completion of the workshop you will:

  • Be able to differentiate between various policy approaches to urban cultural diversity in different eras and parts of the world.
  • Understand how different cities have designed and implemented intercultural city strategies.
  • Be equipped with practical tools for devising and implementing intercultural strategies in your own conditions.
  • Be aware of key concepts such ‘diversity advantage’ and the ‘intercultural lens’.
  • Be aware of a wide range of practical examples from many different environments.
  • Have access to a global network of knowledge and policy experimentation.
  • Be familiar with the Intercultural Cities Index, a tool for evaluating and comparing performance across cities.
