Short Fiction: Introduction

Compelling and original short stories are built from a mix of joy, insight, sweat, tears (sometimes), and discovery. Learn how to write these stories and develop your writing and editing skills through exercises, instruction, in-depth discussion, and constructive class feedback. Topics include plot, structure, character development, dialogue, prose styles, and other fiction fundamentals. Rewriting, editing, and remaining motivated are key aspects of the course, as well as the discussion of craft issues and short fiction markets.
