Annie Dillard famously said that a memoir writer "must decide two crucial points: what to put in and what to leave out." In this one week intensive course, we'll think about exactly what makes a personal story compelling to readers. The course will focus on everything from writing scenes and developing characters to navigating the ethical complications of writing about real people and experiences. Class time will be split between lecture, discussion, and writing exercises.
The format of this course is in-class summer institute.
