This course can be taken as part of the UBC Micro-certificate in Writing and Communication Skills for the Workplace: Grammar and Style or as a standalone course.

Can’t remember the difference between a conjunction and a preposition? Want to know how to spot sentences that use the passive voice? Do your modifiers dangle?

Through a variety of written assignments, learn how to write well-constructed sentences and effective paragraphs. Topics include tips for devising clear, concise sentences, and avoiding common mistakes such as faulty parallelism, fragments, run-on sentences and dangling and misplaced modifiers.

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to detect and correct grammatical errors in your writing and produce clear, concise prose.

Week 1: Starting with the Basics: Introduction to Grammar

Week 2: The Building Blocks: Parts of Speech

Week 3: The Framework: Sentence Structure

Week 4: The Framework: Sentence Structure and Challenging Construction

Week 5: Final Touches: Avoiding Common Errors

Week 6: Punctuation Hacks

How am I assessed?

This course is graded as complete/incomplete based on participation.

Expected effort

Expect to spend 3–4 hours per week completing readings, exercises and assignments, and participating in online forum discussions.
