Who It’s For
The UBC Certificate in Digital Content and Communications is designed for professionals engaged in communications, public relations, marketing, content creation, media curation and social media, and whose roles involve the use of digital technologies. This program is suitable for emerging digital communications specialists and managers who are leading and coordinating communications for their organizations.
The UBC Certificate in Digital Content and Communications is a part-time program consisting of five required courses and a selection of electives offered in either in-class or 100% online formats.
In-class courses usually range from 12 to 15 hours, running over a period of four to six weeks, evenings and weekends at UBC Robson Square in downtown Vancouver.
Online courses are delivered over six to eight weeks in an interactive learning environment where you can engage in both the content and class discussions. Online tutors facilitate student learning throughout the course and are available to provide feedback via email and through discussion forums. Courses involve an average of six to ten hours of study per week.
Each online course:
- includes reading online course material and case studies, as well as participating in online discussions, activities, quizzes and independent study
- is assessed through individual discussion posts and assignments
- has assigned completion/submission dates for each assignment (usually weekly)
- is taught by a highly qualified online tutor with direct industry knowledge and experience in adult education.
Courses are offered throughout the year and students register at their own pace. You may also complete two required courses before applying to the certificate program.
Students learn through discussions, presentations, assignments, guest speakers and networking. Individual assessment is based on assignments, case scenarios, class participation and projects that utilize applicable technologies and skills learned in class.
To be granted the UBC Certificate in Digital Content and Communications, students must successfully complete required and elective courses up to a minimum of 150 course hours and demonstrate competency in digital communications by earning a minimum passing grade of 60% on each course, or a "pass" on portions of the program that are graded "pass/fail."
Participants must complete all requirements for graduation within two years of admission to the program.
The curriculum provides an open, flexible structure that allows participants to choose core courses in any sequence, along with a selection of electives to augment their professional skills. The program focuses on the planning and creation of digital communications strategies and application of digital technology, giving relatively less focus to the techniques for production of creative content (for digital media production courses, see Multimedia and Web Design). Through each course, participants are challenged to develop well-structured objectives, present persuasive ideas and practice skills by delivering creative project plans.
This part-time program includes five required courses as well as a selection of in-class and online elective courses for a total of 150 hours. Learn through discussions, presentations, assignments, guest speakers and networking and be assessed based on assignments, case scenarios and projects using applicable technologies.
Note that the program evolves over time to meet the current realities of the technology and marketplace. Therefore, the learning objectives, subject areas, topics, speakers and assignments that make up the program will change over time to reflect the needs of program participants, new best practices and technologies, and the best use of university resources. The program may also change in duration, number of instructional hours or requirements for completion.
The following courses are required to graduate. Each course meets approximately once a week for four-to-eight weeks, and completion of all five required courses totals 69 hours.

In addition to the 69 hours of required courses, in order to complete the UBC Certificate in Digital Content and Communications you must successfully complete several elective courses, for a total of a minimum of 150 program hours. The following courses represent a selection of the available electives. Elective courses allow you to focus your education on one or more areas of digital content and communications. We recommend choosing a specialized stream of elective courses but you may choose any course from the selection below.
Note: Only courses from the respective certificate or award of achievement programs may be applied. Workshops are not eligible electives.

The program is taught and facilitated by experienced and practicing industry experts in digital communications, as well as experts in the areas of content strategy, digital storytelling, user design/user experience, IP and rights management, and project management specific to digital communications.
Applications to the program are accepted on an ongoing basis. There is no cost to submit an application; however a one-time $200 administration fee is due upon acceptance into the program.
Course fees are paid on a course-by-course basis and the total tuition is approximately C$7,000.
Books or related course materials may constitute an additional cost. Fees are subject to change.

The admissions process helps to ensure that the qualifications, needs, intentions and expectations of students are adequately matched to the program’s objectives and capabilities. Admission to the program may be limited by the availability of courses and instructors.
To qualify for acceptance, you should have the following:
- post-secondary education
- a minimum of three years of experience in digital communications or a related field which may include marketing, public relations, content creation, web design/development, writing, web/digital analytics and/or social media.
- strong written and spoken Business English skills for participation in one-on-one interactions, group work, presentations, projects and assignments and in electronic communications. Non-Native English speakers may be required to demonstrate proficiency in English by submitting the results of language proficiency tests and may also be subject to an interview prior to admittance.
