BC Teachers may apply for a bursary for the full tuition amount of our French Summer Institutes (July 3-20, 2017). Funding is provided by the Government of Canada. Bursaries for BC teachers are administered directly by UBC Continuing Studies for the French Education Branch of the BC Ministry of Education.
Please note, this bursary is only applicable towards the UBC Continuing Studies French Summer Institutes, which take place in Vancouver. It is not applicable towards the Institut de Français, UBC à Québec, which takes place in Quebec City. For more information about that program, please view their website.
You should carefully read and understand the program information before applying for a bursary. UBC Continuing Studies will review completed application forms in the order they are received. Applicants will be notified by email if their applications are accepted or declined. An application may be declined if it is incomplete, or if UBC Continuing Studies concludes that the applicant does not meet eligibility requirements, as indicated by the applicant’s submitted materials. We will send acceptance letters to applicants approved for a bursary until we have reached our quota of bursaries.
To be eligible, applicants must have a valid BC Teaching Certificate or Letter of Permission to teach from the Teacher Regulation Branch. Non-certified teachers from independent schools classified under Group 3 may provide a letter from the school administration confirming their employment instead. Current employment with a BC school district is NOT required.
Priority for bursary funding will be awarded in the following order:
- teachers attending the 3-week, full day program
- teachers attending the 3-week, morning only program
- teachers attending the one-week program.
If funds are remaining after June 24, bursaries will be offered to employees of BC school districts who are not certified teachers, but who have regular contact with students in French programs.
Step 1: Pay the $300 administration fee. This administration fee is only refundable if the bursary application is denied or upon completion of the French Summer Institute. Please make note of the invoice number for your application.
Step 2: Complete and submit the bursary application form indicating which program you would like to take and your level. You do not need to register for the program separately.
- BC Teaching Certificates or Letters of Permission will be confirmed with the Find a Teacher database on the Teacher Regulation Branch website.
- Non-certified teachers from independent school classified under Group 3 will need to provide a letter from the school administration confirming their employment.
- Non-teachers who fulfill the requirement above will need to upload a letter from their school administration.
Step 3: You will receive an email confirming receipt of application. Eligible applicants will be placed on a waitlist. When funding is confirmed by the Ministry of Education in spring 2017, bursaries will be awarded in priority sequence. The status of your application will be confirmed by email at this time and if you have been awarded a bursary, you will be registered in the summer institute indicated on your application. If funding remains, bursaries will then be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
Step 4: Upon completion of the French Summer Institute, if you have fulfilled the attendance requirements, you will receive a full refund of your $300 administration fee within one month of the program’s end.
You must attend 80% of instructional time in order to qualify for the bursary. UBC Continuing Studies will not receive a bursary for teachers who do not complete the program or fulfill the attendance requirements; these teachers will not receive a refund of the $300 administration fee and must pay the full tuition amount.
If you choose to withdraw from a French Summer Institute, please notify UBC Continuing Studies as soon as possible. Please note there is no refund of the $300 administration fee.
Please note that bursaries are taxable. BC teachers will receive a T4A for the full tuition amount and participants in the three-week program will also receive a T2202A form.
Retroactive Bursary Applications
If you have already completed the Summer Institute and fulfilled the attendance requirements, you may apply for a bursary retroactively, provided there is available funding remaining. Applications will be accepted until September 1, 2017, and will be allocated based on available funding.
